Satisfy Your Senses with Ideal Sleeping Spaces

View of a Modern and Creative BedroomA clean and comfortable bedroom is essential to a good night’s rest. To feel truly at home as a renter, it is important to create a bedroom sanctuary of your own. Most people spend a lot of time – almost one-third of your life! – in their bedroom. It’s important for us to understand that if our rooms don’t nurture feelings of peace or relaxation, we should consider changing the setting. There are a number of ways to change things up in your bedroom to turn it into something more than just a space for sleeping.

One thing to take note of, though, is that while a lot of bedroom updates require no landlord approval, there are a few that might. So, best to check with your landlord about it first. One of the best no-approval-required places to start to create a comfortable and aesthetically pleasing bedroom is with your bed. Find the perfect mattress, sheets, and pillows. These are the essentials for a good night’s sleep. If your mattress isn’t as comfortable as it used to be, that’s probably because it’s already old. Usually, if a mattress is seven years old or more, it’s due for replacement. If you can’t afford to immediately replace it, consider adding a plush mattress topper. A good pillow is a wise investment for your resting head. When the pillows are hard and flat, it might be time to retire them and get new ones. If you are currently using polyester sheets, consider switching to a nice cotton set, instead. Cotton breathes much better and can help keep you comfortable all night long.

Needless to say that the most comfortable bed can only do so much in providing relaxation if it’s not paired with a bedroom that’s just as pleasant. Get creative with the appearance of your bedroom. This will allow you to accomplish an attractive and personalized space of your own. Is your bedroom filled with clutter and unused items? Clear them out! A clean and arranged area helps alleviate stress. Arrange your things by placing them in compartments. This is one step towards relaxation.

Also, why not decorate your space? Make it truly your own by giving it visual appeal and personality. For instance, embellishing your walls with beautiful artwork or photos is a way to add color and visual interest to your room. A bedroom update that surely requires no landlord approval is the use of a colorful bedspread, heaps of pillows, and the addition of an accent lamp — get creative! If your bedroom has a large wall, try adding a colorful quilt or other items to add warmth and liven up your space. There are multiple ways to tailor-design your home without making any lasting changes. For example, you can add curtains or rugs. Blackout curtains can help eliminate outside light while adding a houseplant can help freshen up the air.

Of course, there are more permanent ways to personalize a bedroom. However, landlord approval should be obtained in writing before attempting to do so. In particular, a few options could be to paint an accent wall, add paneling and a chair rail, or draw a border on the walls of your bedroom. Other changes that entail more work are installing shelves and other fixtures on the walls. These aren’t quick and easy to implement so that means it might need approval from your landlord. Once you get the approval to implement these changes, you’re one step closer to your ideal sleeping space. A good rule of thumb is that anything you add that cannot be easily removed, damage-free, generally requires pre-approval from your landlord first.

Lastly, to improve the comfort of your bedroom, make sure that ventilation and airflow are well facilitated inside the room. For the most part, this requires an HVAC system checkup and prior landlord approval. A small but important detail nonetheless, if the house does not already have one, ask your landlord to allow you to install a ceiling fan. Just remember that if you plan to make such changes yourself, any electrical work must be performed by a licensed electrician. In case you prefer installations that aren’t permanent, you can opt for freestanding fans, air purifiers, or diffusers. These can help circulate and freshen the air in your bedroom and keep you deep in restful sleep.
